We are a group of students, parents, and education justice organizations working together to build community power, generate accountability for education equity, and design and support transformative family engagement practices in schools and districts so that all students thrive.
In 2016, Bay Area Parent Leadership Network (PLAN) and Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth held a convening through which parent leaders and staff set the intention to conduct the community-led research necessary to develop a set of standards for Transformative Family Engagement (TFE). In 2017, we launched a workgroup to guide the development of the TFE standards. The workgroup included parent leaders and staff from Bay Area family engagement organizations, including Building Blocks for Kids, Californians for Justice, Coleman Advocates, PLAN, and Sacred Heart. Throughout 2018 and 2019, the workgroup facilitated student and parent focus groups and regional community convenings to design the TFE standards based on the knowledge and lived experiences of students and their families.
